Ocotillo

Leaves will only form on ocotillos if the stems are wet, as from rain. When the stems remain dry the leaves die soon afterwards. The bare stems of the plant are somewhat photosynthetic, though - if you look closely you will see green tissue showing peeking out from beneath bark cracks.
